A private, fixed-fare transfer from Gatwick North or South Terminal to the correct Southampton cruise terminal, planned around both your live flight arrival and the ship's all-aboard time.
Gatwick Airport to Southampton Cruise Port taxi & cruise transfer — fixed fare from £169, door-to-door, 24/7.
A private, fixed-fare transfer from Gatwick North or South Terminal to the correct Southampton cruise terminal, planned around both your live flight arrival and the ship's all-aboard time.
The journey from Gatwick Airport to Southampton cruise port is about 85 miles and normally takes 1 hour 45 minutes, with extra time needed during the weekday peak and summer traffic on the south-coast corridor. Your driver meets you inside arrivals, follows the actual landing time and takes you directly to City, Horizon, Mayflower, Ocean or QEII Cruise Terminal.
This is an embarkation-day transfer, so the ship deadline matters as much as the flight. Tell us your flight number, ship and sailing date: we confirm Gatwick North or South, check the Southampton berth, choose the correct dock approach and size the vehicle for your full cruise luggage before travel day.
A Gatwick-to-cruise transfer is governed by both the aircraft and the ship. The road journey is about 85 miles and usually takes 1 hour 45 minutes, but immigration, baggage reclaim and the ship's all-aboard time determine whether a same-day connection is sensible.
We track the arriving flight, confirm whether it uses Gatwick North or South Terminal, and verify which of Southampton's five terminals your ship is using on that sailing date. Terminal assignments can change, so the ship name and date are more reliable than assuming a cruise line always uses one berth.
For a comfortable same-day transfer, allow the airport exit, up to 2 hours 15 minutes of road time at busy periods, and a separate margin before all-aboard. If the timetable is too tight, arriving the day before is the safer and usually less expensive decision.
Illustrative planning windows with checked luggage. Exact advice depends on passport control, traffic, terminal and the ship's published all-aboard.
| Flight lands | Likely airport exit | Cruise terminal arrival | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|
| 06:00 | 06:45–07:15 | 08:30–09:30 | Comfortable for most afternoon sailings |
| 08:00 | 08:45–09:15 | 10:30–11:30 | Usually comfortable |
| 10:00 | 10:45–11:15 | 12:30–13:30 | Check the all-aboard carefully |
| 12:00 | 12:45–13:15 | 14:30–15:30 | Only suitable for a late sailing |
| After 13:00 | 14:00 or later | 16:00 or later | Arrive the day before |
These are planning ranges, not guarantees. A delayed flight uses the same margin that protects your sailing connection.
Gatwick has two terminals about a mile apart. Your driver waits inside the arrivals hall of the one your flight actually uses, with your name on a board. The first 60 minutes after the aircraft lands are free, which covers passport control and the baggage belt.
A taxi from Gatwick Airport to the Southampton cruise port costs from £169 for an economy saloon for up to 4 passengers, with Gatwick's own airport charges already included, so there is nothing to add at the airport. It is the same fixed price for all five cruise terminals, from Ocean and QEII in the Eastern Docks to City, Horizon and Mayflower in the Western Docks. Estates, MPVs and the 8-seater minibus for cruise luggage and groups are priced in the table on this page.
The road distance is about 85 miles, around 15 more than from Heathrow, and the drive usually takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. The port's own estimate from Gatwick is about 1 hour 45 minutes too. On a Friday afternoon or a summer Saturday, allow up to 2 hours 15 minutes. The price stays the same whichever route your driver takes and whatever time your flight lands.
For a couple with full cruise luggage landing at Gatwick on the morning of sailing. Neither the coach nor the train goes to the cruise terminals, and timetables change, so check National Express and National Rail for your date.
| Option | Gatwick to the ship | Changes | What it involves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hampshire Taxi (fixed fare) | About 1¾ hours, up to 2¼ hours at busy times | None | £169 for the car, up to 4 passengers: met inside arrivals, flight followed, taken to the door of your ship's terminal |
| National Express coach | Allow about 3 hours, plus the last leg | One | Coach from either Gatwick terminal to Southampton Coach Station, then a taxi to the docks with your cases |
| Train | Usually 2 to 3 hours, plus the last leg | Two or more | No through train: at least one change on the way to Southampton Central, then a taxi to your terminal |
With cruise luggage, count how many times you will lift the cases as well as the price per person. The coach is the cheapest way for one or two people; for three or four, one fixed fare for the whole car is often close to the cost of separate tickets, and it is the only one of the three that ends at the ship.
Southampton has five cruise terminals in two separate dock areas, and around three million cruise passengers pass through them each year. The terminal is printed on your cruise ticket and luggage tags. Give us the ship and sailing date and we check it against the port's own schedule.
| Cruise terminal | Dock area | Berth | Dock gate |
|---|---|---|---|
| City Cruise Terminal | Western Docks | Berth 101 | Dock Gate 8 |
| Horizon Cruise Terminal | Western Docks | Berth 102 | Dock Gate 10 |
| Mayflower Cruise Terminal | Western Docks | Berth 106 | Dock Gate 20 |
| Ocean Cruise Terminal | Eastern Docks | Berth 46 | Dock Gate 4 |
| QEII Cruise Terminal | Eastern Docks | Berths 38 & 39 | Dock Gate 4 |
The same ship can use a different terminal on another date. The two dock areas have different gates, and a car at the wrong one has to leave the docks and drive round to the other, which is why we confirm the terminal before travel day and not on the dockside.
Arriving a day early removes the one real risk in a fly-cruise, which is a late flight on sailing day. Where you sleep decides what the transfer looks like.
If you hold a US or Canadian passport with the biometric symbol on the cover, you can use the automatic eGates at Gatwick instead of queuing for an officer. Children can use them from age 8 if they are at least 120cm tall and travel with an adult. When the gates are open this is usually the fastest part of the airport.
You also need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you travel to the UK. It is applied for online, every passenger needs their own, including children, and it should be arranged well before the flight and not at the airport.
Our fare is fixed in pounds sterling when you book, so you know the cost before you leave home. Pay online by card (the overseas card fee of up to 3.25% + 20p is shown before you pay) or pay the driver in cash, in pounds. Tipping is welcome in the UK but never expected, and we never add it to the fare.
The slow part of the airport is usually the baggage belt, not the border. Cruise luggage is heavier and there is more of it, so we plan the day on the time you are likely to walk out of arrivals, not on the time the aircraft lands.
Cruise passengers travel with more luggage than most airport passengers, and the right car is decided by the cases as much as by the seats. A saloon carries up to four passengers, but only two large cases in the Economy saloon and three in the Comfort car. That suits a couple, and it rarely suits four adults who are sailing for a fortnight.
Four people with a large case each need the Estate, which carries four passengers and four large cases. A family or group of five or six needs the MPV, with room for five large cases, and up to eight passengers with eight large cases travel in the 8-seater. Enter both the number of passengers and the number of cases when you book, and the booking form shows which cars have enough seats and room for them.
The price for every car on this route is in the fare table further down this page. It is a price for the car, not per person, so a larger group is usually paying less per seat than a couple.
The return journey has a different risk. On the way out the ship will not wait for you; on the way back the flight will not. Ships normally berth early in the morning and passengers leave in groups, so the flight you can safely catch depends on your place in that order as well as on the road.
We plan the two journeys separately, each against its own deadline, and you can book both at once. The page for the return journey has a table of disembarkation times against the earliest Gatwick flight we would be comfortable with.

A morning Gatwick arrival can work well for an afternoon Southampton sailing, but a late-morning flight with checked luggage may not leave enough recoverable margin.
Send us the flight number, date, ship and all-aboard time. We will assess the connection honestly and recommend a Southampton hotel the night before when that is the safer plan.
