A few nights in London before a Southampton sailing is one of the most popular ways to start a cruise from Britain, and for good reason: the capital is ninety minutes from the port, most international flights land there, and it turns a transfer day into a holiday. But it creates a specific morning that catches a lot of passengers out. Hotel checkout is usually at eleven. Cruise boarding windows often open at eleven or twelve. And between the two are eighty miles of road that start in the middle of one of the world's busiest cities.
The London to Southampton cruise port taxi exists to make that morning work. Once on the M3 the journey is a quiet 60 to 70 minutes. We enter the port through the dock gate for your terminal — Dock Gate 4 for the Eastern Docks, Dock Gates 8 or 10 for the Western — and stop at the terminal door, where porters take your checked luggage. Private car versus the cruise line's coach versus the train
Three ways to get from London to the Southampton cruise port on sailing day. We run one of them, but here is an honest account of all three.
Private car, hotel door to terminal door
Pickup time set to your ship and your hotel, luggage handled at both ends, one vehicle for your whole party, a fixed fare agreed in advance. For two or more people it costs about the same per head as the alternatives and removes every handover. Its weakness: it is not the cheapest for one person travelling light.
The cruise line's transfer coach
Some lines sell a coach from a central London point or from Heathrow. It is reliable and the price is known. Its weaknesses: a fixed departure time regardless of your hotel or your morning, a taxi to the coach pickup point with all your luggage, a coach-park drop at the terminal rather than the door, and no flexibility if anything changes.
Train from Waterloo, then a taxi
Around 80 minutes to Southampton Central, then a short taxi to the terminal. Cheapest for one person. Its weaknesses: a taxi to Waterloo first, no porters, stairs and platforms with cruise luggage, a second taxi from Southampton Central at exactly the moment every other cruise passenger wants one, and a cancelled train on the one morning you cannot absorb it.

Travelling as a party from London to the ship
Pre-cruise London stays are often taken by extended families and groups of friends sailing together, and the transfer should be planned as a group rather than as separate cars. One eight-seater from one hotel is cheaper than two saloons, arrives at the terminal together in the same boarding window, and keeps the luggage in one place.
Where the party is split across two hotels, we can collect from both on one journey if they are in the same part of London — Kensington and Knightsbridge, say — and the second pickup is a stop on the same fare. Where the hotels are on opposite sides of the city, two vehicles meeting at the terminal is usually quicker than one vehicle crossing London twice.
Luggage is the thing to count before you count people. A two-week cruise for four is routinely eight cases and four cabin bags, which is an eight-seater's worth of boot space for four passengers. Tell us the case count at booking and the correct vehicle arrives first time; there is no spare car in central London at nine on a Saturday morning.

Do not plan around the eleven o'clock checkout
It is the most common mistake on this route. Passengers book a transfer for eleven because that is when the hotel wants the room back, and then discover that eleven from a City hotel for a two o'clock all-aboard is not a plan, it is a gamble.
Settle the bill the night before, pack the night before, and take the pickup time from our table above rather than from the hotel's checkout policy. A hotel will always let you leave early. A ship will never let you board late.
