Direct, fixed-fare taxi from Luton Airport to Southampton. We meet you at Luton arrivals, monitor your flight and deliver you door-to-door anywhere in Southampton — city, cruise terminal, hotel or home. No meter, no surge.
A Luton to Southampton taxi covers around 100 miles and takes about 2 hours in normal traffic. Whether you're flying into Luton for a cruise departure, a Southampton stay or a home pickup, we quote a single fixed fare before you book and hold to it regardless of traffic.
Your driver meets you inside the Luton arrivals hall with a name board, helps with your luggage and tracks your flight — so early landings or delays are handled automatically with no waiting charge. Choose from saloon, estate and executive cars, MPVs and 8-seater minibuses for families and groups, with the first child seat free on request.
From Luton the route runs south on the M1 to the M25, round the west of London to the M3, then straight down the M3 to Southampton. Luton has a single terminal, so there is only one arrivals hall to meet you in, and the whole journey stays on motorways.
Most passengers landing at Luton have flown in with easyJet or Wizz Air from a European city. Luton is north-west of London in Bedfordshire, about 100 miles from Southampton, and the drive runs down the M1, round the west side of the M25 and down the M3 — around an hour and three quarters in normal traffic.
The rail route is less direct than it looks: the DART shuttle from the terminal to Luton Airport Parkway, a Thameslink train into London, a change across the city to Waterloo, and then a train to Southampton. With luggage, it is usually well over two and a half hours.
| Option | Journey time | Changes | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hampshire Taxi (fixed fare) | About 2 hours | None | From £219 for the car; met in arrivals, cases carried, straight to your address, hotel or ship |
| DART, Thameslink and South Western Railway | Usually 2½ to 3 hours | Two or three | Luton Airport Parkway, a Thameslink train into London, across the city to Waterloo, then a train to Southampton Central |
Luton is a good choice for embarkation day as long as the flight lands in the morning: allow about 45 minutes from landing to the car and about two hours on the road. For a check-in slot before midday, or a flight that often runs late, consider travelling the day before.
A guide for passengers flying in on embarkation day. It assumes about 45 minutes from landing to the car and about two hours on the road, and that you want to reach the terminal inside your check-in slot.
| Flight lands | Leaving Luton around | At the cruise terminal around | Our advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 07:00 | 07:45 | 09:45 | Comfortable for any afternoon sailing |
| 09:00 | 09:45 | 11:45 | Works for a check-in slot from midday onwards |
| 11:00 | 11:45 | 13:45 | Only if your check-in window is late and the ship sails in the evening |
The M1 and the west side of the M25 are busy on weekday mornings, so the earlier rows carry the most margin. If your flight is later than these, fly the day before.
The terminal is not on the railway. The Luton DART shuttle links it to Luton Airport Parkway station in about four minutes, runs up to every four minutes and costs £4.90 for an adult single, although a rail ticket bought to Luton Airport includes it.
From Parkway the Luton Airport Express and Thameslink trains run to London St Pancras; the fastest take a little over half an hour. Southampton trains leave from Waterloo, on the other side of the city, so you cross London with your cases before the last hour and a quarter to Southampton Central. Then there is the ride from the station to your hotel, home or ship.
That is why the car is usually quicker door to door than the train, even though the train is faster once it is moving: there is no shuttle, no change across London and no last leg at the other end.
A transfer from Luton to any of the five cruise terminals costs the same as one to a Southampton hotel. Three of the terminals are in the Western Docks, City through Dock Gate 8, Horizon through Dock Gate 10 and Mayflower through Dock Gate 20, and two, Ocean and QEII, through Dock Gate 4 in the Eastern Docks. They are a couple of miles apart by road, so we confirm your ship's terminal from the port's schedule before the day.
Cruise luggage decides the car as much as the number of people. An Economy saloon takes two large cases, the Estate four, the MPV five and the 8-seater eight, each with seats for everyone as well. Enter the passengers and the cases on the booking form and it shows the cars that fit.
