Gatwick sits around 85 miles from Southampton with an expected drive time of roughly 1 hour 40 minutes. We quote one fixed price before you travel and hold to it regardless of traffic or route changes, so the fare you see is the fare you pay.
Your driver monitors your flight and meets you at the North or South terminal with a name board and luggage assistance. From solo travellers to families with child seats and large groups with surfboards, golf clubs or excess luggage, our fleet covers every need — saloons, estates, executive cars, MPVs and 8-seater minibuses.
Searching for the cheapest way to get from Southampton to Gatwick? For a family or group with luggage, a private taxi from Southampton to LGW often costs less than the train, and it is the only option that is genuinely door to door. No train change at Reading or Clapham Junction, no dragging suitcases through stations — your driver collects you from your Southampton address and drops you at the correct Gatwick terminal. The 85-mile journey follows the M3 and M25, passing Basingstoke and the Surrey countryside before arriving at Gatwick in roughly 1 hour 40 minutes.

Southampton to Gatwick is the one airport run with a real routing choice
Most airport transfers from Southampton have an obvious road. Gatwick does not. At roughly 85 miles it is our longest mainstream airport route, and there are two credible ways to drive it that differ by around fifteen miles and, depending on the hour, by nothing at all in time. Knowing which one to take on a given morning is the difference between a relaxed 1 hour 40 minute run and a frustrating two hours plus.
The southern route runs east along the M27 and then onto the A27 coastal corridor before turning inland towards Horsham and picking up the M23. It is the shorter option in distance and it avoids the M25 entirely, which is its great attraction. The cost is that the A27 is not a motorway — it drops to dual carriageway with roundabouts and 50mph stretches around Arundel and Worthing, and it is genuinely slow in the summer holiday season when the coast is busy.
The northern route goes the other way: M3 north as if heading to Heathrow, then anticlockwise on the M25 and south down the M23 into the airport. It is longer in miles and it deliberately takes on a section of the M25, but it is motorway from end to end. Outside the peaks it is often the faster of the two, and it is far more predictable because motorway delays are better reported and easier to route around.
Whichever way we go, your fare does not change. That is worth stating plainly, because a metered taxi has an incentive to take the longer road and you have no way of auditing the decision. On a fixed-fare Southampton to Gatwick transfer the incentive runs the other way — we choose the route that gets you there on time, and the extra fifteen miles cost you nothing.
Southern coastal route vs northern motorway route
This is the actual decision your driver makes on the morning of your Southampton to Gatwick taxi. We check live conditions before setting off rather than defaulting to one or the other.
Southern — M27 / A27 / M23
Northern — M3 / M25 / M23

Around 78–82 miles
Around 92–96 miles

Best for
Weekends, evenings, out-of-season travel

In practice we take the northern motorway route for most early-morning weekday departures and the southern coastal route for evening and weekend travel outside the summer peak.
Gatwick's two terminals, and why the distinction matters
Gatwick has North and South terminals roughly a mile apart, each with its own access road off the airport spur and its own drop-off arrangements. They are connected by a shuttle transit that takes a couple of minutes to ride — but getting to it with luggage, and finding it, is what actually costs you time.
Confirm your terminal from your flight number Airlines move between Gatwick's terminals more often than passengers expect, and a booking confirmation printed months ago is not always current. Give us your flight number when you book and we will confirm which terminal you need. This is the single most valuable thing you can do to make a Gatwick departure smooth.
The forecourt charge, and the free alternative Both Gatwick terminals operate a paid drop-off zone directly outside departures, with a free long-stay option connected by shuttle bus. For a departure we use the forecourt as standard so you and your bags arrive at the terminal doors. The access charge is passed through at cost on your quote, never marked up.
Where your driver meets you Inside the arrivals hall with a name board, at the exit from baggage reclaim — not curbside and not in a car park. Gatwick's arrivals halls are compact compared with Heathrow's, which makes meeting straightforward, but it also means the concourse is busy. Your driver will be positioned where the crowd thins out, and will call you if you have not appeared.
If you land at the other terminal Not a problem on arrival — we track your flight, so we know which terminal you actually came into before you do, and your driver is already at the right one. The inter-terminal transit only becomes relevant if your airline changes terminal at short notice, and even then it is a two-minute ride once you find it.
How we plan a Southampton to Gatwick departure
The extra distance on this route means the planning matters more than it does for a short hop. Here is what happens between you booking and your driver arriving.
We work backwards from your flight, not forwards from your door Tell us the departure time and we set the pickup from it, allowing three hours at the terminal for long-haul and two for short-haul, plus the realistic drive time for that hour of that day. You are welcome to override it if you prefer more or less buffer — some travellers want four hours at the airport, and that is a perfectly reasonable request.
We check both routes on the morning Before your driver leaves for the pickup, live conditions on the A27 corridor and the M25 are both checked. Summer weekends push us north; weekday mornings when the M25 is solid push us south. This is a decision made on the day with current information, not a fixed policy.
Your driver arrives early and waits For airport departures the driver aims to be with you ahead of the booked time. There is no charge for that early arrival and no pressure on you to leave sooner — it exists so that a late driver is never the reason you miss a flight.
One vehicle, one driver, door to terminal No changes of car, no shared pickups, no diversions to collect other passengers. On an 85-mile run with luggage this matters more than on a short journey, particularly if you are travelling with children, a lot of cases or sports equipment.
Southampton to Gatwick by taxi, coach, train or car
What each option really involves for a Gatwick departure. Coach and train figures are typical; check National Express and National Rail for your exact date, as times and fares change with the season and how early you book.
Option
Journey time
Typical cost
What to expect
Hampshire Taxi (fixed fare)
About 1 hour 40 minutes, door to terminal
£169 for the car, up to 4 passengers
Collected from your door and dropped at North or South terminal; no changes, luggage handled, available for the earliest flights
National Express coach
About 3 hours from Southampton Coach Station
From a few pounds per person when booked early
Direct to both Gatwick terminals, several times a day — but you still have to reach the coach station with your cases
Train
About 1 hour 50 minutes at best; often nearer 2½ hours
From around £11 per person with advance tickets
At least one change on most journeys, with stairs and platforms to manage; the first trains can be too late for an early departure
Drive and park
About 1 hour 40 minutes, plus the car-park shuttle
Long-stay parking priced by date and season
Your car waits at the airport for the whole trip; allow time for the parking bus to the terminal
For one person travelling light in the daytime, the coach or train is the cheapest way to Gatwick and we will say so. For two or more people, heavy luggage or a flight before 8am, a fixed-fare taxi is usually the simplest and often costs less per head.
Cruise passengers, holiday flights and the Gatwick pattern
The Southampton to Gatwick passenger mix is noticeably different from the Heathrow one. Heathrow skews business and long-haul; Gatwick skews leisure, package holidays and short-haul Europe, with a strong cruise component in both directions.
In practice that means more luggage per passenger, more families with children needing seats, and more group bookings than we see on the Heathrow corridor. It also means more very early departures — Gatwick's short-haul schedule starts early, and a 06:00 flight from Gatwick means leaving Southampton around 01:30.
The cruise traffic runs the other way. Gatwick to Southampton cruise port transfers cluster on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings in the sailing season, timed against all-aboard rather than check-in. Where a flight can be rebooked, a sailing cannot, so we build a deliberately larger buffer into embarkation-day journeys and track the ship's schedule alongside the flight.
For groups, the practical advice is to book one larger vehicle rather than two saloons. An eight-seater carries a family's cruise luggage in a single load, costs less than two cars, and means nobody is separated on a two-hour drive. Tell us your case count as well as your passenger count when booking — luggage, not people, is what usually determines which vehicle you actually need.
One honest warning about this route in summer
Between late July and the end of August the A27 coastal corridor is the busiest it gets all year, and the southern route to Gatwick can lose forty minutes to traffic that simply is not there in April. If you are flying out of Gatwick on a summer Saturday morning, take the earlier pickup we offer rather than the later one.
We will still hold your fixed fare either way. But a fixed fare cannot un-jam the A27 outside Arundel, and no operator who tells you otherwise is being straight with you.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a taxi from Southampton to Gatwick?
A fixed-fare Southampton to Gatwick taxi starts at £169 for an economy saloon. MPVs and 8-seater minibuses are available for groups. The price is agreed before booking and includes meet & greet and flight monitoring.
How long does the journey take?
The drive from Southampton to Gatwick is approximately 85 miles and takes around 1 hour 40 minutes in normal traffic. Your driver will plan the route to avoid congestion where possible.
Which terminal will I be dropped at?
Your driver will drop you directly at Gatwick North or Gatwick South terminal according to your airline. Tell us your flight number when booking and we'll confirm the correct terminal.
Do you monitor flights?
Yes. On Southampton to Gatwick transfers we track every flight and adjust your pickup automatically for early arrivals or delays — at no extra charge.
Can I pay by card?
Yes. You can pay securely online by card when booking, or pay your driver in cash on the day. Both options are available on every transfer.
How much is a black cab from Southampton to Gatwick?
A licensed black cab from Southampton to Gatwick is not available as a direct service — most black cabs do not travel that far. A pre-booked fixed-fare private taxi from Hampshire Taxi starts at £169 all-in with no meter, no surge and no extras.
Can I get an Uber from Southampton to Gatwick?
Uber from Southampton to Gatwick is available, but the price moves with demand and can rise sharply on busy evenings, and a driver may turn down a long trip. A pre-booked fixed-fare private taxi guarantees your driver, your car and your price — from £169 door to door.
Do you offer a Southampton to Gatwick cruise transfer?
Yes. We link Southampton's cruise terminals (City, Ocean, Mayflower, QEII and Horizon) to Gatwick Airport for fly-cruise passengers. We track both your ship's berthing time and your flight, so even a delayed docking is re-timed against your check-in window.
Is there a coach from Southampton to Gatwick Airport?
Yes. National Express runs direct coaches from Southampton Coach Station to both Gatwick terminals, taking about 3 hours, with several departures a day. It is the cheapest option for one person with a small bag. A taxi costs more but starts at your door, needs no change and runs at any hour — which matters for early flights and families with luggage.
Is there a direct train from Southampton to Gatwick?
Most journeys need at least one change. The fastest take about 1 hour 50 minutes, and many are nearer 2½ hours once the connection is included. With luggage, children or an early flight, the door-to-terminal taxi is usually the easier choice.
Which route is best from Southampton to Gatwick?
It depends on the day. The southern route via the M27, A27 and M23 is around 80 miles but includes non-motorway dual carriageway with bottlenecks at Arundel and Worthing. The northern route via the M3, M25 and M23 is around 95 miles but motorway throughout. We check both on the morning of travel and take whichever is genuinely faster — your fixed fare does not change either way.
Why is Southampton to Gatwick further than Southampton to Heathrow?
Because Gatwick sits south-east of London while Southampton is south-west, so there is no direct motorway between them. Heathrow is a straight run up the M3 at about 70 miles; Gatwick is roughly 85 miles by road and takes around 1 hour 40 minutes, either going around the coast or up and over via the M25.
Do you drop at Gatwick North or South terminal?
Whichever your airline uses — tell us your flight number when booking and we will confirm it. The two terminals are about a mile apart with separate access roads, so this is worth getting right before travel day rather than discovering it at the airport.
What time should I leave Southampton for a 06:00 Gatwick flight?
Around 01:30 for a short-haul departure, allowing two hours at the terminal and a clear overnight run. Gatwick's early short-haul schedule means very early pickups are routine for us. Pickups between 10pm and 6am carry a 15% night rate, which is included in the fixed quote you see before booking — nothing is added on the day.
Is the A27 route slower in summer?
Yes, noticeably. From late July through August the coastal corridor around Arundel and Worthing can add forty minutes compared with spring or autumn. For summer weekend departures we will usually recommend an earlier pickup, or route north via the M25 instead.
Can you take a cruise group from Southampton to Gatwick after a sailing?
Yes. We collect dockside at the City, Ocean, Mayflower, Horizon or QEII terminal and run directly to Gatwick. Because disembarkation is staggered by luggage group across two to three hours, we set the pickup against your actual disembarkation time rather than the ship's arrival time, and an eight-seater will take a family's cruise luggage in one load.
