Arriving the day before turns a stressful embarkation into a relaxed one. The question becomes where to sleep, and each option has a different transfer pattern.

Land, transfer to Southampton, sleep, and take a ten-minute ride to the terminal the next morning. Southampton's city-centre hotels sit within a mile or two of every terminal — the Grand Harbour, Holiday Inn, Premier Inn West Quay and Moxy are all popular pre-cruise choices — and the city has a waterfront, an old town and Westquay for an easy evening.
A Heathrow airport hotel
Sleep off the flight beside the airport and transfer to Southampton in the morning. This suits very late landings when you do not want a 75-minute drive at midnight. The morning transfer then has the whole day's margin — but it does mean starting embarkation day with a drive rather than a stroll.

North American passengers
For US and Canadian cruisers landing at Heathrow
The Heathrow to Southampton cruise port corridor is heavily used by North American passengers, because Southampton is the home port for transatlantic crossings and for many British Isles and Northern Europe itineraries that Americans and Canadians fly in to join. Overnight flights from the East Coast land between 06:00 and 09:00, which happens to be the ideal window for a same-day embarkation if the ship departs in the late afternoon.
US and Canadian passports are eligible for the eGates at Heathrow, which cuts immigration to minutes when the gates are running. Baggage is the slower step: cruise luggage is heavier and more plentiful than airline luggage, and it arrives on the belt no faster for being important.

If your flight lands at Heathrow before 09:00 and your ship's all-aboard is 14:00 or later, a same-day transfer is comfortable and we will run it with a margin to spare. If your flight lands after 10:30, or your ship sails before 14:00, or your flight has a connection, arrive the day before.
A pre-cruise night in Southampton costs less than travel insurance would pay out for a missed sailing, and it turns embarkation day into a ten-minute ride from a hotel to a ship. We will happily do either. We would rather you chose with your eyes open.
